Antarctic Atmospheric River Climatology and Precipitation Impacts

چکیده
The Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) is sensitive to short-term extreme meteorological events that can leave long-term impacts on the continent's surface mass balance (SMB). We investigate of atmospheric rivers (ARs) AIS precipitation budget using an AR detection algorithm and a regional climate model (Modèle Atmosphérique Régional) from 1980 2018. While ARs their associated vapor transport are relatively rare over coastal regions (∼3 days per year), they have significant impact climatology. responsible for at least 10% total accumulated snowfall across East Antarctica (localized areas reaching 20%) majority events. Trends in annual frequency since observed parts AIS, most notably increasing trend Dronning Maud Land; however, interannual variability much larger. This behavior appears drive portion trends Antarctica, while controlling AIS. landfalls likely when circumpolar jet highly amplified during blocking conditions Southern Ocean. There fingerprint Annular Mode (SAM) West with SAM+ (SAM−) favoring increased Peninsula (Amundsen-Ross Sea coastline). Given large influence continent, it advantageous future studies moisture consider framework especially considering SMB changes.

Spatial and Temporal Variability of Antarctic Precipitation from Atmospheric Methods
The spatial and temporal variability of net precipitation (precipitation minus evaporation/sublimation) for Antarctica derived from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts operational analyses via the atmospheric moisture budget is assessed in comparison to a variety of glaciological and meteorological observations and datasets. For the 11-yr period 1985–95, the average continent...
متن کاملThe Antarctic Atmospheric Energy Budget. Part I: Climatology and Intraseasonal-to-Interannual Variability
The authors present a new, observationally based estimate of the atmospheric energy budget for the Antarctic polar cap (the region poleward of 708S). This energy budget is constructed using state-of-the-art reanalysis products from ECMWF [the ECMWF Interim Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim)] and Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative fluxes for the period ...
متن کاملThe Global Precipitation Climatology Project ( GPCP ) Combined Precipitation Dataset
The Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) has released the GPCP Version 1 Combined Precipitation Data Set, a global, monthly precipitation dataset covering the period July 1987 through December 1995. The primary product in the dataset is a merged analysis incorporating precipitation estimates from low-orbit-satellite microwave data, geosynchronous-orbit-satellite infrared data, and ra...
متن کاملWarm season precipitation climatology: first European results
To date very low scores are associated to quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) of warm season precipitation, a fact mostly due to the little knowledge of the mechanisms driving these phenomena. The study aims to produce a five-year climatology (1999–2003) of warm season precipitation systems (MJJA) over Europe using Meteosat IR brightness temperatures as a contribution to a global study l...
